Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants are usually considered pests when they enter your premises. They may do so while searching for food or water. This article will provide details on these important but sometimes pesky insects.

When are odorous house ants likely to enter your home?

Odorous house ants can be found in homes all over the world but they are most likely to enter your premises after heavy rains. This is because their nests are shallow and may become flooded easily. Some of these insects have wings, making it even easier than usual for them to move their nests.

When do odorous house ants release their scent?

Odorous house ants do not always release a scent. They are usually relaxed and travel together in straight, orderly lines. However, if they are disturbed, they will start to run around erratically and this is when they may also release an odor.

This odor is not necessarily strongly unpleasant. However, it does issue a warning to anyone who would want to harm the ants. It is reminiscent of a pine forest although some people have also described it as rancid coconut.

What attracts house ants?

Odorous house ants are attracted to safe habitats. They often leave a home as soon as it no longer suits their needs and it's not uncommon for them to move their nests as often as every three weeks during the summer.

They will move to locations where there are sweets, such as sweet fruit and pastries. They also like other foods, such as crunchy cheese snacks, chips and meats, so they will raid your snack bag.

Where can house ants nest?

Odorous house ants can nest in a wide range of locations. They can nest near your doors, in unused bird nests, under stones and in mulch. Inside your home, Their nests can also be found in insulation and window frames.

Controlling Ants in Your Home

It can be difficult to control ants in your home. While ants play an important role in nature, no one wants to be bitten in their home. If ants are making a nest in your home, you can call a professional for assistance.

You can also trim trees and shrubbery away from doors and windows, since these make it easier for ants to enter your home. You can also repair cracks and crevices because these provide ants with access to the interior of your home. Always wipe surfaces clean, since crumbs and sugar crystals will attract ants.
